First Commissions

A major Australian arts project

About the Project

In February 2019, to celebrate the power of artistic minds and the launch of our redeveloped Southbank campus, we gave 30 students and alumni their first commission.

This commission was inspired by themes found in works by the likes of Michelangelo, Frida Kahlo and Bob Dylan. At the time of receiving the commission, the artists had no knowledge of its origin.

This online gallery features the works of these exciting emerging artists. Spanning new media, choreography, classical music, interactive composition, visual art, music theatre, animation and film, the works collectively pose the question: how have the universal themes that influence and shape society evolved over time?

First Commissions was launched in Florence on 2 July by Vice-Chancellor Professor Duncan Maskell. A local Melbourne exhibition was held as part of Open House Melbourne from 27 to 28 July.
