New exhibition Sounds of Clouds explores hidden worlds of clouds

Project8 Gallery will this week launch the new exhibition Sounds of Clouds, a meditation on clouds and the limits of interpretation.

Curated by Associate Professor Kim Donaldson from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, Sounds of Clouds is the latest project by The Ghosts of Nothing (aka Sean Lowry and Ilmar Taimre), a fictional ‘band as artist’ formed in 2014.

This latest instalment by The Ghosts of Nothing will premiere at Project8 Gallery featuring a rich, conceptually and materially interrelated constellation of paintings, photographs, objects and limited-edition artefacts, which together seek to evoke a dynamic and malleable universe. It represents the second instalment of a three-part, multi-year project comprising a feature-length film with an original soundtrack presented at the core of a new immersive exhibition.

Although a quasi-narrative arc is suggested across the film and surrounding works, Sounds of Clouds resists fixed interpretation. Successive clouds coalesce in an otherworldly presence that is suspended in space-time. The result is a disquieting yet poetic sense of strangeness—something at once hauntingly familiar and profoundly alien.

Associate Professor Kim Donaldson said: “After the success of their earlier exhibition Sounds of Unridden Waves, I have had pleasure in working with The Ghosts of Nothing as the curator of this new and exciting venture focusing on a deep and meditative investigation of clouds.”

The Ghosts of Nothing said: “Nothing is best said when one has richer things to show.”
