Bells Make Me Sing: re-recording a Brian Brown classic to celebrate 40 years of Jazz and Improvisation

Composed by the late Brian Brown, who initiated Jazz and Improvisation at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1981, Bells Make Me Sing (1979) was revisited and reimagined to celebrate 40 years of the course.
Meet Nicholas Williams, Associate Director of Performance – Ensemble Studies at the Melbourne Conservatorium
Dr Nicholas Enrico Williams is an Associate Professor of Music, Music Director and Conductor of the Wind Symphony and Concert Band at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne. His teaching credits include being Assistant Director of Wind Studies, Conductor of the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and the Director of Athletic Bands at the University of North Texas. He also spent a decade as the Conductor of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra Wind Symphony. Williams is an advocate for chamber music, a prolific conductor and arranger, and a sought-after recording session producer. Here, we talk to him about what makes a great performance.

Commissioned for the Multivocal exhibition at Old Quad, University of Melbourne (co-presented by Old Quad and Grainger Museum) this 3-channel video piece will open alongside almost 100 significant objects and artworks from the history of music on campus.
