Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Special Study
About Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Special Study
Special Study provides students with the opportunity to develop an individual project on a topic of interest under the supervision of a specialist staff member. Students will regularly meet with their supervisor and it is recommended that prior to applying students contact potential supervisors and discuss their availability to supervise the project.
Project Requirements
Students who wish to undertake a Special Study project will need to submit a project proposal (approximately 500 words in total) which will include:
- Background to the topic to be explored.
- Evidence of familiarity with the existing literature on or related to the topic.
- Outline of a methodology to be used.
- Description of the projected outcome(s) (see requitements below).
- Relevance of the project to your study plan or future career.
There is flexibility around the nature of the project, which can be either traditional research or combine research with creative practice (performance or composition).
Special Study cannot be used to receive instruction on a second (minor) instrument or to develop a performance-only or composition-only project.
You may explore a related instrument (for example, Baroque trumpet for a trumpet player) or less frequented areas of your instrument/voice repertoire (for example Renaissance songs if you are a tenor) if it is part of a properly developed project.
In these cases, the supervisor must be a permanent member of the Conservatorium staff.
The outcome of the project will be a written research report of 4,000 words or equivalent. This may include elements such as performance, curation, score production, etc., however, all outcomes must have a written component of no less than 2,000 words detailing the research conducted.
