Join Suzanne Derry, a Senior Solicitor from the Arts Law Centre of Australia, in a walk-through of Arts Law and how it may apply to your practice. Introduction to Arts Law examines the essentials of copyright, intellectual property, and contracting within the arts and breaks down the facts of owning and using your copyright, creating copyright with other people, and the protocol around seeking permission to use someone else’s work.
The workshop will also examine the difference between copyright and intellectual property with advice on how to own, maintain and potentially commercialise your intellectual property. Finally, the workshop will look at contracting and take you through what a contract is, and some of the key issues artists often deal with when negotiating arts contracts.
The session will provide space for a group Q & A. Students with confidential or complex queries are invited to attend the workshop and book an additional Arts Law Advice Clinic.

Suzanne Derry is the Senior Solicitor at the Arts Law Centre of Australia, where she has worked for over 10 years. Suzanne has worked for a number of community legal centres and a boutique entertainment law practice. Suzanne provides legal advice on a copyright, contract, defamation, debt and business structures. Suzanne enjoys educating artists about their rights and providing practical advice across a range of arts areas.
