Incorporating video, bronze sculpture and bamboo maps, Sand and Stars reveals the intimate relationship between Torres Strait Islander culture and spirituality and the cosmos. Mabo’s imagery is deeply personal. Her small star shaped bronzes refer to ‘star sand’, a type of sand found in the channel between Mer, Dauar and Waier islands in the Torres Strait. The bamboo used to construct her maps has been harvested from bamboo grown by her father Eddie Koiki Mabo.
