In contemporary Australia, a process of aestheticization has seen traditional artistic characteristics incorporated into all aspects of daily middle class life and amongst many examples, the rise of ‘foodism’ stands out. Far from class neutral, food is now the preeminent arena of aesthetic discrimination and of social distinction. The works in this exhibition harness this obsession along with other manifestations of taste with the ambition of avoiding a clichéd indictment of consumption in favour of a reflection on the complex ambivalence of our shared middle-class existence.

This exhibition comprises part of the VCA School of Art PhD Program.
