Drawing from a range of esoteric beliefs and technologies, The Alchemy of Auto//Mysticism: Exploring Subjectivity Beyond the Visible explores alternative strategies of subjective practice beyond contemporary hypervisibility. Kellie Wells’ PhD research explores both the evolving subjective position in visual art and the purpose, potential and pitfalls of the ‘self as subject’ in artistic practice. Auto//Mysticism is a unique creative methodology emerging from a range of discourses on temporality, esoteric technologies, and strategies of practice alternative to contemporary hypervisibility. Designed within speculative spheres which orbit the Knowing, Unknowing and Unknowable realms of subjectivity, Auto//Mysticism foregrounds personal accounts and reliquary bodily materials from terrains of felt, remembered, or imagined realities. This research contribution relates auto to mystery in a practice which proffers the videos, sculptures, and documents of autobiography not as destinations but as multiple creative doorways to move through.
