Into the Woods
A note from the Director
When we are young, we wish on stars, but as we grow, we begin to understand that what we wish for and what we want are often different things. And as we grow how do we talk to our children when life doesn’t go as planned? How do we explain death, poverty, affairs, miscarriages, and trauma? Do we tell these stories to our families with direct sincerity, or do we massage the truth and create a fairy tale? When we reach a fork in the road, we know that sometimes the world can be far more colourful and joyous than we could ever dream, and surprisingly darker, more violent and harder than we possibly could have imagined.
When revisiting ‘Into the Woods’ before starting work on this piece again, I was drawn immediately to the narrator character who lives outside the world of the piece. The Little Match Girl story is about poverty, lack of safety at home, and yet the Little Match Girl sees in her match flames the joys and stories that others take for granted in their everyday lives. While the saddest part in her own story is she never attains these things, she manages to see more magic and light in the world and in others than the rest of us, and experiences such joy in watching their stories unfold.
When the world around us feels uncertain, it feels more important than ever to treat people with inclusivity and respect. To question which path we should take next and whether there’s a better way forward. We will not get it right at every turn but, ‘we have to take the journey’.
Throughout this journey, I've been continually inspired and enlightened by this incredible team of young people, whose insights have shaped the hopeful, creative, and quirky world of this piece. I am so grateful for the path we have walked together and I am overjoyed that you will join us, as we take the next part of the journey.
