Note from the Director
It has been such a pleasure working on this fascinating musical by James Millar and Peter Rutherford. In a time of seemingly endless revivals, jukebox musicals and new works adapted from well known movies, A Little Touch of Chaos is an assured and original piece.
The book and lyrics by James, partly autobiographical in theme and subject, provide fascinating challenges, with many scenes in different time periods and locations. Scenes up to 35 years apart often play together and counterpoint and inform each other. The action often switches in time and location in an instant.
Peter’s beautiful music, with many songs that grow effortlessly out of the action and the wonderful choral motifs that reappear throughout the piece add to the fascination.
The piece is moving, often very funny and always intriguing.
The very talented group of third year student performers have embraced the demands of the piece with great enthusiasm and skill. The student design team have been a delight to work with and have come up with beautiful solutions, while the stage management and production teams have demonstrated great professionalism. And thanks to my terrific collaborators, Daniel Griffin and Ross Hannaford.
