A View from the Bridge

Director's Note

When asked to direct Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge, I was left speechless. I played Beatrice in Melbourne Theatre Company’s production in 2019, and the prospect of re-visiting this work from an entirely different viewpoint was nothing short of thrilling. I quickly learned that this incredible play had lodged itself deep into my core. My heart knew and understood its persistent need to be told, and like its narrator Alfieri, I am compelled and moved by this cautionary tale.

When we re-visit a play, it has a way of showing us something new – of whispering its contemporary desires. One is never quite sure what will be birthed. As this version revealed itself, we witnessed the impact of having a chorus of female narrators in a very masculine world. We viewed the plight of newly arrived migrants from our current contemporary lens. As history repeats, we too repeat the stories that simply need to be told – over and over.

In joining me, the actors, creatives and production team have embarked on an unforgettable life lesson well beyond their years. They have shown nothing but commitment and love for this tragic tale, and consequently, they have shared in the joy of collaboration. I have loved every moment and am grateful to the full team and to all the staff and mentors supporting from the sidelines.
