W.A Mozart – Die Zauberflöte by Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Opera students

During the second COVID 2020 lockdown in Victoria, the Master of Music in Opera Performance students at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne, continued their studies remotely, and as social distancing rules relaxed, they were able to come in small numbers to the rehearsal studio. Working in a green screen environment, Mozart’s Magic Flute was learned and recorded. With a greatly reduced score, achieved using in a clever musical arrangement by Donald Nicolson which employed harpsichord, fortepiano and synthesiser, a small screen context for the opera production emerged.

Director Jane Davidson and videographer Kade Greenland collaborated to develop this imaginative production. These few clips reveal the aesthetic, and the full production with two different casts is due for release soon.
