You Look Beautiful From Afar
Ground control? Can you hear me?
I’ve been trying to reach you, but I think I’m running out of power.
I can’t look at your face when I'm talking to you. It’s like watching an eclipse, or trying to see underwater. I think I can picture you more clearly when my eyes are closed.
What I'm trying to say is… sorry, I'm getting another call. We can try again later.
Everywhere
Nowhere
Good Morning. Welcome to our town.
There is nowhere else you'd rather be!
Hello from the sunny side of the street.
Clear skies and clear minds.
For today is like yesterday and tomorrow even brighter.
Poetic Response
written by Liam Duivenvoorden as an accompaniment to the work Here, There, Everywhere
I start with my shoes, slowly peeling back the Velcro
Tugging them off my feet, feeling my sock slip under my heel
It’s awkward, but I undress anyway
I think my shirt is the next step, and then my pants
And now I’m standing in front of you in my underwear
I feel silly
I start to pull my jocks down, but along with it goes my skin–
Sorry, that wasn’t meant to happen
And yet you look at me like I’m supposed to keep going
I peel the skin off my torso, twisting my arms in a way that I hope looks good
I turn around to show you the parts of me you haven’t seen
Looking back over my shoulder–
My deltoid falls off, hitting the floor like a dead fish
I start apologising and lean over to pick it up
But my tongue falls out as soon as I open my mouth
And– oh, my arm is on the floor now too
I think the rest of me collapses then, but I can’t see it
My eyes are falling out of my skull, bouncing and rolling along
Until I’m viewing you at just the right angle,
You’re walking over to the pile of me
Unlocking my ribcage, and pulling out my heart
It’s supposed to hurt
You were supposed to love me
And I was supposed to cry about it
But you’re just so far now
And I’m just a camera really
A pair of eyes on the floor looking up at you
Like the night sky
Stargazing in your freckles
And I think I’m too in love with you to notice how you’re picking at my hear
Pulling at the nerves on it like it’s a loose thread on a knitted jumper
My heart doesn’t even have a body any more
It has you
Do you think my nerves know the difference between ecstasy and absence?
They burn so much, and the hormones are the same after all.
I wish I hadn’t fallen apart on you
You deserved a better version of me
One that didn’t break at the first sign of trouble
One that could see what was coming, and stop it in time
But I didn’t.
And it’s here now.
I hope it crushes me, I hope everything we are becomes dust
Scattered across the cosmos
Nowhere in particular
Nowhere at all.
