Legally Blonde The Musical
Director's Note
It’s rare that an adaptation surpasses its predecessor. Rarer still when the story has already travelled from novel to film, and then from screen to stage. Yet Legally Blonde the Musical takes the spirit of the original novel, borrows from the world of the much-loved film and rather than simply retell the story we know, explodes it into something bolder, funnier and unexpected, transforming the earlier adaptations into a joyous, irreverent and heartfelt celebration of being unapologetically yourself.
There is certainly an evolution of feminist discourse between adaptations. Amanda Brown’s 2001 comic novel explored the ‘subversive’ idea that a woman could be underestimated because of her femininity and succeed without surrendering it, giving us a tale of individual female empowerment. The hit film of 2001, adapted by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, expanded the novel’s concerns into a story of female friendship, solidarity and self-determination.
The musical, adapted by Heather Hach, Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, opened on Broadway in 2007. They reinvented the material, allowing feminism to become the engine of the story, celebrating female agency expressed collectively, theatrically and unashamedly. The protagonist, Elle Woods, gathers something new and evolves with each adaptation.
Almost twenty years after the musical’s debut, we operate in a culture where women are still having to negotiate whether they can be feminine without being diminished by femininity, ambitious without being labelled difficult, sexually confident without being sexualised, and successful without having to perform masculinity to earn respect, making Legally Blonde feel unexpectedly prescient. The music, the pink, the fashion, the humour and the exuberance of the musical are not distractions from the feminist discourse, they are the discourse.
Legally Blonde, by virtue of its needs, is a challenging musical. My huge thanks to the brilliant creative, design, stage management, wardrobe and workshop teams, the VCA Music Theatre students and staff who rose magnificently to the challenges and worked tirelessly to present this production of Legally Blonde the Musical.
My hope in 2026 is that all young people still finding their way will walk away from Legally Blonde understanding they should never accept that having to change what makes them unique and quintessentially themselves is the price they need to pay to be taken seriously, to succeed at life, or to get ahead in this world.
