The Melbourne Conservatorium Young Artists Academy (MCYA) offers a comprehensive chamber music program for Victorian students aged 14 – 18 who display talent and ambition, and are contemplating a career in the performing arts.

We believe that highly talented young musicians should be given the opportunity to study with leading teachers in an energising and supportive Conservatorium environment. At the core of our musical focus is the development of chamber music skills, and the value those skills bring to today's young musicians. The Academy aims to foster individuality of expression and internal group communication all within fully supported musical and social contexts borne of decades of pedagogical experience.

The MCYA will offer advanced students both in-depth chamber music and large ensemble experiences, with an emphasis on developing a wide variety of performance skills.

Our program will be delivered in two phases of four weekend days each per semester.

In the initial stages, the Saturday program will begin with a two-hour chamber music session where students will be placed in string quartets or piano trios, followed by an hour used for exploration of musical topics including; languages in music, stagecraft, baroque dance, rhythm workshops and lively discussions on a range of relevant musical topics.

After a short lunch break, we will continue in a different formation: students will be placed in either the String Ensemble, Cello Ensemble or our Multi Piano Ensemble, working on a broad range of repertoire from the Renaissance to Contemporary Music.

The MCYA program on Sunday is geared towards performance and will include masterclasses with national and international artists and regular concert performance opportunities for our students.

The program is aimed to complement the individual teaching that students are already receiving so students accepted into MCYA will continue to take individual lessons with a teacher of their own choosing.

The MCYA is dedicated to fostering the young musical talent for which Melbourne is renowned, and we are excited to bring you this inaugural program of the Melbourne Conservatorium Young Artists Academy in 2021. We look forward to providing a stellar atmosphere working with the talented young musicians of Victoria.
