Odette Creanga-Kurth

Violin


Romanian-Canadian violinist Odette Creanga-Kurth trained as a violinist at the Bucharest National University of Music, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, the Boston University School of Music, and at the Aspen Festival and Spoleti Festival dei due Mondi. Her teachers include Dorothy Delay, Kurt Sassmanshaus, Peter Zazofsky, Eugene Lehner, Varujan Cozighian, Radu Ungureanu, the Lasalle Quartet, and the Muir Quartet. She also trained as a teacher at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Education. As a high school student, she won First Prize in the Romanian National Music Competition in both 1977 and 1979, and in 1984 she won the Starling Music Competition in Cincinnati. She has had a dual career as both an orchestral violinist and string orchestra teacher.

Odette is currently teaching violin at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, following a 20-year teaching career in Vancouver, Canada, where she built the leading high school strings program in the nation. Under her baton, her orchestras frequently participated in major high school competitions in the United States and Canada, winning festival grand prizes in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver.

She was also a busy professional violinist for more than 20 years, as a concertmaster, first violinist, and principal second violinist in symphony and opera orchestras in the U.S. and Canada, including the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Radio Orchestra, Vancouver Opera, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops Orchestra, Boston Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Boston Ballet, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Aspen Festival Orchestra, and Spoleto Opera Festival Orchestra.

Odette has sustained a fulfilling professional career through her enduring passion for music and commitment to effective teaching and musical expression.  She ensures that her students thrive in a learning atmosphere that stimulates their achievement and ambition, while nourishing their love of music.

Odette and her partner Richard Kurth are blessed with two daughters, Olivia and Maia, aged 27 and 17.
