Melbourne Conservatorium

IgniteLAB is a professional development program that supports creative entrepreneurship and enterprise skills for musicians. Music graduates need specialist support to build a sustainable career and create opportunities for their work.

Since 2016, IgniteLAB has provided:

  • Individual career coaching to hundreds of music students
  • Delivered dozens of career related workshops
  • Funded a range of student-led projects.

Some examples of the student-led projects that have received business mentoring and funding include:

  • Little Music Lab: A program for children 4 – 12 years old with a focus on learning and play through music technology.
  • Beyond the Stage: Practical, interactive workshops designed to engage and equip musicians aged 12-17 with the confidence to embrace the stage.
  • Apollo: Pop up guerilla performance of contemporary ballet and modern classical music.
  • Wimmera Health Care Group Fundraiser: A charity fundraiser in collaboration with the Horsham Art Gallery.
  • Jazz Melbourne: Establishment of a Melbourne based professional jazz orchestra including education programs.
  • MIDI Guitar Glockenspiel: A self-playing instrument that uses electromagnetic motors to actuate the mallets on a glockenspiel.
  • Isolation Improvisation Collective: A series of online performances devoted to experimentation, cross disciplinary communication and connectivity.
  • Deep Water Greenhouse: A pop-up performance space for indie music festivals.
  • Sounds Delicious: Combining new art music and food in a unique audio-gastronomic experience in collaboration with restaurant "Matilda".
  • Bentleigh Community Choir: A music therapy led community singing project to develop support and social networks.
  • International Music Therapy Program: A new music therapy program providing classes and instruments for abandoned orphans with disability in China.
  • Treblemakers Project: An interactive Classical music show for children in collaboration with Public Libraries Victoria.
  • INTER-VIEW: A podcast exploring the narratives of Asian-Australian diaspora artists.
  • Candlelight Vox: Establishment of a student-led vocal ensemble for music and non-music majors.

IgniteLAB is co-designed with students and offers an evolving program which directly responds to the needs of students and emerging opportunities in the industry.

Victorian College of the Arts

A number of industry placements and development opportunities exist for students at the Victorian College of the Arts, including the Faculty's Global Atelier Program, which provides opportunities for students to travel as part of their course and place their education in an international context.
