The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Hamer Hall

University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra 2023 Tour

See the repertoire

A showcase of Australia's leading tertiary orchestra performing Mahler and more live in September 2023.

Led by conductor Associate Professor Richard Davis, the University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is one of Melbourne’s leading cultural and classical music fixtures.

The Orchestra showcases more than 100 of the very best student classical musicians from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and our unrivalled orchestral training program.

On our 2023 tour, the Conservatorium shared the talents of these exceptional musicians with orchestra-lovers in Melbourne, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, with a concert program including works by Mahler, Ginastera and our own Melody Eötvös (Senior Lecturer in Composition).

We also presented a special Chamber Music concert in Singapore, featuring a program of works by Mozart, Prokofiev and Batterham performed by student ensembles and side-by-side student-and-staff ensembles.

Performance footage will be available in the coming weeks.

The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is supported by The Sidney Myer and MSO Trust.

Symphony No. 1 in D major – Gustav Mahler

An embodiment of Mahler’s philosophy that a symphony "must encompass everything”: birdsong and trumpet calls; a waltz and a funeral march; a final movement ascending from Hell to Heaven.

Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 28 – Alberto Ginastera

An incredibly virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 1, featuring soloist Timothy Kan.

Hun Tur – Melody Eötvös

A stunningly beautiful work commissioned for premiere on this tour, composed by the Conservatorium’s Melody Eötvös, Senior Lecturer in Composition.
