Buxton Contemporary

A dynamic gallery and learning resource for the Southbank Campus and community.

Passionate art collector Michael Buxton donated his private contemporary Australian art collection to the University of Melbourne. The Buxton Collection consists of 300 works by 53 significant Australian artists. The collection is housed in a purpose-built museum, which opened in March 2018.

Buxton Contemporary was designed by Fender Katsalidis and is located on the corner of Southbank Boulevard and Dodds Street.

Michael Buxton said of the donation:

“By donating this magnificent collection to the University of Melbourne, we are ensuring its longevity as a dynamic collection that will evolve and grow. It will educate future generations of students and serve as a resource for all Australians aspiring to understand or collect challenging contemporary art.”
