The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Opera, the Early Music Studio and VCA Design and Production present Claudio Monteverdi's amazing last opera, L'incoronazione di Poppea (Venice, 1643), which explores themes of ambition, betrayal, and the moral ambiguity of power. Poppea, driven by her desire to become empress, manipulates Emperor Nero to achieve her goals, leading to a web of deception and the downfall of other characters.

The Coronation of Poppea (L'incoronazione di Poppea), performed in Venice in 1643, was Claudio Monteverdi’s final opera. With a libretto crafted by Giovanni Francesco Busenello, the piece is based on historical figures, centring on Poppea, the mistress of Roman Emperor Nero. It weaves a fictional narrative beginning with a Prologue that questions divine power as Goddesses of Fortune and Virtue dispute which of them has more authority over humans. They are interrupted by Cupid, who claims the greatest influence of all by wielding love. The ensuing tale delves into these themes and demonstrates the complexities of human moral behaviour, particularly in relation ambition and desire. It provokes the audience to ponder the nuanced areas that exist between what is considered “right” and “wrong.” Poppea, aspires to become Empress and is determined to achieve her goal, even though her lover, Nero, is married to Empress Ottavia. Alongside Nero, Poppea plots her ascent, concocting plans that draw her closer to her ambitions. Throughout the opera, a succession of betrayals and manipulations leads to the downfall of several more virtuous characters, ultimately culminating in the ascension of Poppea to the status of Empress. This conclusion prompts the audience to reflect on whether the heroine has really emerged victorious and does love conquer all?
