Design and Production at the VCA encompasses all aspects of design and technical production for live performance: set design, costuming, sound design, lighting design and stage management.
We train designers, technicians, makers and managers for live performance and film, in areas including scenery, props, costume, sound, lighting and stage management. In our graduate programs the focus is on design. They are tailored for you to transfer and further develop your skills in design and theatre or film-making, building on your previous experience – whether it be in architecture, design, construction, film, performing arts, visual art or another associated field.
Studying design and production is inherently collaborative. Being embedded in a world-class fine arts institution, you will gain practical experience working on live, large-scale performances with our Music Theatre, Theatre, Acting and Dance students, or film projects with our Film and Television students. When you graduate you have a portfolio of experience to set you up for your career.
Design and Production Courses
Our Design and Production staff
As designers we build the visual world to engage the audience and enrich the storytelling. We help the audience to understand what’s happening, set the mood and tone, build the backstory of the characters and help the audience see and understand who, where and why we are in this place and time.
