Dance Company 2023

It is with enormous pleasure and pride that on behalf of VCA Dance Staff we introduce the 2023 Dance Company to the community through our graduation triple bill. This year’s graduating cohort are arriving at their final performance season during a time of deep reflection in Australia.  Their performances embody a depth of physical thinking, feeling and care for the future and past of the Australian dance ecology.  The place of dance is nomadic, eruptive and everywhere.  The title of our season - before, between, beyond - arose from dialogues between Company dancers and Dance Lecturer, Rheannan Port.  She reminded the Company to look to the layers of experience and the stories of place that are embedded and entangled with the deep time of the land on which we dance, acknowledging the guardianship of the Boonwurrung and Bunurong peoples.  Dance can be silent and seething, witnessing and confronting. VCA’s 2023 Dance Company are discovering how to express their agency and values in collaboration and with creative guidance from an international team of esteemed dance makers:  Alleyne Dance (UK), Nicole Corea (US/Aus) and Joel Bray (Wiradjuri). I invite you to join with them in marking these performance encounters with what has gone before, what is between us and what is beyond and to celebrate their achievements.
