HEATHERS The Musical

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

We all know a “Heather”. We have all received the stinging lash of their tongue and a scolding burn from their stares. Some of us still carry the emotional scars made by the venomous claws of these apex predators.

As a film, HEATHERS was ahead of its time. It dug deep into the high school social structure of America, exposing the true darkness that lurks within. The movie is perfect source material to turn into a musical, an urgent allegory for our time. A masterfully crafted musical that explores what it means to be human in our world.

It’s terrifying to see that not much has changed since 1989. Our world is still suffering a social and political asphyxia, we need change and we need it now. As the global community tries to navigate and reconcile with its current state, we need theatre that encourages and demands inclusion, empathy, compassion, equality and diversity. Never has there been a better time for HEATHERS to exist.

At the heart of this musical, behind the sarcasm and pom-poms is a thumping drum championing a better tomorrow. HEATHERS is a musical that interrogates the social, cultural and moral value system of the western world through the lens of a high school musical. What a combo, right?!

HEATHERS has never been more relevant than it is right now. At the time of writing this note, America has just faced more mass shooting than there have been days this year; suicide is one of the top killers of our population; and mental illness is at an all time high across the planet. We stand on the precipice; we are a world screaming for transformation; for humanity to be saved and all that is good to be restored.

On a symbolic level, HEATHERS is a show that explores a broken America. On a human level we see individuals navigating their way through life, finding self and identity. To all the “Martha’s” in our audience we love you! To all the “Veronica’s” out there we need you! To all those in our audience who are actually named Heather....sorry (not sorry)!!
