Critical and Theoretical Studies

Banner artwork: Lucca De Clario

Historical and theoretical foundations are presented alongside a range of critical issues, from germane to contemporary studio practices across the visual arts. This sub-discipline seeks to provide students with the agency and means to identify and navigate their own pathways.

Unlike traditional art history and theory programs, we seek to meaningfully connect abstractions of theory with broader capacities for reflective thinking through making in the complementary immersive studio-based programs. This program demonstrates that art is central to broader cultural and political discourse and consequently forms an essential part of the way in which we understand ourselves and the world in which we live.
