Meet Cara Hagan and Brenton Surgenor, new faces of VCA Dance
Leading specialist in somatic education, choreography and dance science Aotearoa-born Brenton Surgenor has lived and worked in the US, the UK, Hong Kong and Australia. His career has spanned choreography, TV, arts administration and higher education. Internationally established artist and scholar Cara Hagan is a dancer from New York, where she has had a rich career including as director and curator of an international screen dance festival, and as facilitator of a grassroots community dance group Small and Mighty Acts. Here we talk to Cara and Brenton about a life in dance and the new Master of Dance at the VCA, University of Melbourne.

Master of Dance will launch at the University of Melbourne in 2022
The Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, home of the Victorian College of the Arts and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, is pleased to launch a new Master of Dance for 2022. The first program in Australia dedicated to dance as an interdisciplinary practice, the Master of Dance incorporates local and global crosscurrents of movement, dance health, education and choreography, and has assembled a new international team of expert practitioners.

Rhythm, gravity and time: Lucy Guerin on the creation of 'Pendulum' for RISING Festival
Lucy Guerin, artistic director of Lucy Guerin Inc, and Matthias Schack-Arnott began conversations about PENDULUM, part of the inaugural RISING festival, as a small-scale work based in rhythm, gravity and time. Incorporating 39 digitally interactive pendulums, the performance installation is positioned on the upper levels of the National Gallery of Victoria and boasts an artistic team of VCA Dance alum including Tra Mi Dinh, Alice Dixon and Lilian Steiner, as well as Honorary Fellow and esteemed colleague of VCA Dance Helen Herbertson, and dancers Deanne Butterworth, Stephanie Halyburton and Amber McCartney. Here, Sharon Grace Flynn talks to Lucy Guerin about the process for developing the hybrid dance installation.

Meet Jordine Cornish, Master of Creative Arts Therapy student at the University of Melbourne

Apples were the order of the day for University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and a select number of Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) students. After the great success of the University of Melbourne Conservatorium student rendition of Bolero, recorded remotely with 104 talented orchestral musicians, Associate Professor in Music and Head of Orchestral Studies Richard Davis decided to raise the bar with a new, ambitious recording-in-isolation project, the William Tell Overture.

Carol Brown announced as the new Head of VCA Dance
Carol Brown has been announced as the new Head of VCA Dance at the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Fine Arts and Music. The internationally-established creative research scholar, academic and professional choreographer will take up the new position of Professor in Dance in mid-2019.
